How to measure for carpet

Multiply the room’s length by width for the area in square feet, then add 10% for trimming, seams, and doorways where the carpet continues. Measure to the widest points of the room so the roll covers any alcoves.

Why square yards

Carpet rolls are typically 12 feet wide, and the industry prices by the square yard. The calculator divides your square footage by 9 to match supplier quotes. If your room is wider than the roll, expect a seam and a little extra waste.

Comparing floor types

Carpet is the softest, cheapest underfoot option. For hard-surface rooms, compare the flooring calculator for planks or the tile calculator for tile.
